This week on April 4th, 1902 a chartered train carried about 250 Gusties to Northfield, MN for the first state oratorical contest. The use of ebony and gold banners on the train trip was the basis for our College colors.

On this day in 1916, the founder of Gustavus, Eric Norelius passed away. He had  been a minister, teacher, author,  and church leader in the Midwest for over 60 years. In 1967,  the College dedicated its new co-educational residence hall to him—a fitting touch, since Norelius supported co-education from the College’s founding in 1862.

Percy Grainger, a renowned pianist and composer visited campus for a few days in 1940 to teach, perform, and lecture with the Gustavus Band.
