On this day in 1916, the founder of Gustavus, Eric Norelius passed away. He had  been a minister, teacher, author,  and church leader in the Midwest for over 60 years. In 1967,  the College dedicated its new co-educational residence hall to him—a fitting touch, since Norelius supported co-education from the College’s founding in 1862.

In the early years there was much debate on the ideal city for the College.  The citizens of St. Peter and the surrounding area pressed hard to build and keep the College located in it’s current location. This is a view of the city of Saint Peter, MN in the early 1900s.
