During the 1933-34  school year Gustavus started its first Women’s Athletic Association (WAA) playing: basketball, swimming, volleyball, and tennis. A women’s recreational program had been started some years before for women who were interested in physical education.

The first intercollegiate basketball game was played by Gustie women. This week in 1903, Gustavus played Mankato Normal (now known as Minnesota State University, Mankato) and lost 16 to 2.
