Homecoming is a tradition that began in 1922 during the basketball season (as opposed to football). The first Homecoming Queen was elected in 1935. Homecoming Queen coronation was disbanded in 1971 by the student body. The tradition was reintroduced in 1986, but changed to elect both a Queen and a King.
