Pop Music USA with Scott Moore! It was so much fun and we learned a ton about popular music throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. We watched and listened to videos of different artists from each decade and learned more about each of their styles of music. He’s an amazing prof which helped make it a great class, too!

  2. Megan Myhre says:

Either J-Term in Italy with the Gustavus Choir, Dr. Aune, and Chaplain Brian, j-term performing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with the cast and Professor Henry MacCarthy, or j-term performing Urinetown: The musical with cast and Professor Amy Seham!

    So many terrific memories

  3. Megan Miller says:

J-term in Fiji (2004) with Lee Brammer and Patty English was my favorite. The Gustavus Choir tour in 2005 was really fun too — we saw the whole east coast from Boston to South Florida! The advice I pass along to every other Gustie is to go somewhere over J-term. Those experiences are at the top of those I had in college.

  4. Sean Tessmer says:

Indian Philosophy with John Cha. Learned so much in such a fun way. Always wanted to take another J-term with him, but he only taught one other one while I was at Gustavus and I decided I needed to take Musical Understanding.

  5. Chris Duhaime says:

My favorite Jterm was very similar to Megan’s… Either the Italy Tour in 2011 or Urinetown the musical in 2010!

  6. Caren Berger says:

Paul Gathercoal’s media class in 95. We learned enough to make a short movie but still had time for fun– like filming commercials at the bar!

  7. Sarah Hanson says:

Religion on Film (2003 with Deborah Goodwin) forever changed the way I watch movies. An excellent class taught by an excellent professor, and I hope she’s still teaching it.

  8. Emily Mamun says:

Shibori with Pat Freiert in 2000 was great. Who knew tye-die could be so complicated — and fun!

And definitely Sanskrit with John Cha in 2003. It was a lot of work, but it gave me a huge sense of accomplishment.

  9. Christina Lundin (Bengtsson says:

I only had one J-term at Gustavus. That was Native American Culture (and arts?) with Mr Goodnaturem in 1991. Very interesting and fun. A good memory for life.

  10. Cara Carlson '08 says:

Pop Music USA also gets my vote! Learned a lot, had a blast and fulfilled the elusive Arts Appreciation credit! That was J-term 2005.

Florence & the Italian Countryside (2007) with Dean Curtin was also excellent!

  11. Paul Mueller says:

Chris Gilbert’s “Hollywood and Politics” in 1997. A movie a day for a month, plus a discussion of the political aspects of the movie.

  12. Amy Showers-Stone says:

Beginning Italian in ’84 with Michael Maione, who usually taught French. Awesome, dynamic prof and such a fun class!

I was thinking on-campus before– also enjoyed my 1987 UMAIE J-Term abroad class, “Mexico, the old and the new” with Professor Leland Guyer from Macalester. We visited Mexico City, Oaxaca, Merida and Isla Mujeres and ruins all along the way–Teotihuacan, Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Monte Alban and others. Life changing experience– met my husband among the Mac students! :+)

  13. Kirsten Mickelsen says:

Jim Gilbert’s Interpreting the Winter Landscape in January 2002!!

  14. Tammy Bonnes Root (88) says:

1986…Art History with Conrad Rudolph. As a biology/chemistry major, it was fun for me to have a class that was so different from all the science classes (and nice to get to spend time in a building other than Nobel!)
