Gustavus Adolphus College has not always been the name of the college. In the beginning the school was called Norelius’s School and the Minnesota Elementar Skola (which in the Swedish school system means a preparatory or secondary school). In 1865 after the move to East Union the school was named St. Ansgar’s Academy (to celebrate the 1000 years anniversary of the death of the ‘Apostle of the North’, Saint Ansgar) and was incorporated under that name.  When a delegation (that included founder Eric Norelius) wanted to move the school to the Twin Cities in 1873, it was reincorporated as Gustavus Adolphus Theological Institute in honor of Gustav II Adolph, a Swedish king who by all accounts was a champion for the country’s religion and education. After a delegation for the city of Saint Peter, Minnesota, approached with an modest offer to move the college to their city   it was renamed again for the final time at its final location: Gustavus Adolphus College.
